Essential Self Care

Essential oils benefits

Essential oils are simple aromatic chemical compounds taken from the roots, stems, bark, leaves, and flowers of plants.  These oils protect plants from environmental threats. Amazingly, essential oils can do wonderful things for you and your family too.

The building blocks, or cells, of plants are similar to those in our bodies.  When we use therapeutic grade essential oils aromatically, topically, or internally, they support our bodies as they do for plants.

Although it can vary depending on the plant/oil, it can take at least one pound of any given plant to create one drop of essential oil. Therefore, nature’s vast pharmacological active ingredients are provided in a single drop. This concentrated dose provides safe, effective, and affordable health care for the whole family.

It used to take two weeks with or without drugs for my kids to get rid of a cold. The nighttime coughing was the worst. Lying in bed listening to my young daughter cough every few minutes made my stomach churn. I often prayed silently, “Please just let her get some solid sleep tonight. Keep me up, but let her sleep.” Her cough lasted more than two weeks. We tried cough syrup, honey, hot tea, even prescription cough medicine. They would give her relief for a short time, but the coughing always came back.

One night in January, she was coughing and I was cringing and praying. My sister had given me some essential oil samples and her diffuser when she was visiting for the holidays. She told me to put 1-2 drops of oil on the bottom of the feet and 4-5 drops in the diffuser. So I put 4 drops of a respiratory blend (Laurel leaf, Cardamom, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Ravensara) in the diffuser and 2 drops on the bottom of my daughter’s feet.  I sat with her for about 10 minutes then went back to bed. When I got into bed my husband said, “What did you do to her?” The coughing had completely stopped. She slept peacefully for the rest of the night, and so did I.

That was two years ago. I haven’t bought cough syrup since then. In fact, my daughter rarely coughs now.  Our whole family relies on essential oils for our physical and emotional health.

My older daughter diffuses a calming blend of oils every night in her room. This gives her emotional support and helps her sleep peacefully. When her ears hurt from swimming a lot, she knows to put a drop of basil and melaleuca behind her ear for relief. If she feels a cold coming on, she automatically puts an immunity blend on the bottom of her feet. Kids are comfortable and open to this natural way of balancing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life.

Not a day goes by that we aren’t diffusing or applying therapeutic grade essential oils. We continue to learn what oils aid and support us when we have health challenges.  We use oils daily in our toothpaste, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, and supplements.  Our oils come in handy for bug repellent, cuts and scrapes, headaches, and anxiety relief. Nothing puts us in a better mood than breathing uplifting citrus oil as we get ready for school and work in the morning.

Essential oils help families take control of their healthcare and emotional wellness in a natural, reliable way.  Bringing nature’s remedies into our homes connects us to the earth and to each other.  These complex chemical compounds are a simple answer to a balanced and healthy life.
